Canada Life wanted to open high-end, full-servce coffee bars located at each of their head office campus cafeterias. We started with a blank slate and I participated in brainstorming sessions to come up with a name and overall concept. I came up with "Café 1847" as a nod to Canada Life's history and its founding date of 1847.
It was clear the coffee bars had to have an upscale feel. We wanted employees who regularly came to work with Starbucks coffee to feel a sense of pride getting their coffee from the same place they work. We wanted Café 1847's brand to align closely with Canada Life's brand while still being unique and recognizable on its own.
After developing a number of logo concepts, we settled on a clean typographical treatment of "1847" within the red square to align with Canada Life's brand.
The logo proved to be bold and versatile, lending itself well to various applications.
